Ares

Ares

Overview

Ares(v1) and Ares(v2) were the fifth and sixth robots I designed and assembled on Team Juice 16236. Ares(v1) featured a one-of-a-kind shifter designed to increase the torque by a factor of 4x for the elevator during the climbing phase. Ares(v2) was designed as the first fully carbon fiber robot in Juice history in order to minimize weight as much as possible.

Like Neptune and all the other bots I designed, Ares(v2) was driven by the principles of simplicity, minimizing weight, and speed, resulting in a design that was simpler, lighter, and faster than Ares(v1).

Ares(v1) led Team Juice 16236 to become the Winning Alliance Captain at the 2024 Roseville Qualifying Tournament.

Ares(v2) led Team Juice 16236 to the following:

  • Finalist Alliance of the Gold Division at the 2024 NorCal Championship
  • Design Award at the 2024 NorCal Championship

Ares(v1) had a large drivebase and was comprised of 1/8” 6061 aluminum and 304 stainless steel, making the robot weigh 34lbs. With the game that season requiring the robot to lift its own weight during the endgame period, this proved challenging. A single gear ratio for the lift to be both fast for scoring and still have enough torque for the robot to climb was unachievable.

This challenge led to the design of the shifter pod. It utilized a 26.9:1 motor to provide the torque (4x of the scoring torque), engaging only during the climb sequence via a servo-driven linkage. The pod is coaxially driven and pivots directly around the motor shaft.

A major factor that drove the “revolutionary” mid-season redesign was Ares(v1)‘s struggle to intake game elements directly off the hexagonal stacks. This struggle led to the design of Ares(v2), which featured a slimmer geometry and switched to a front-to-back game element orientation compared to the previous side-by-side orientation.
